Medium: Post-Consumed Plastic & Paper, Dimensions: 240" x 72" x 14" This sculpture is made from post-consumed plastic collected on the streets of Montreal (PQ), The paper is mulched in an ordinary blender and sprayed, layer upon layer, onto the plastic until the matrix of paper fibers is strong enough to hold everything together.
These are among the first of the bottle cap sculptures. The sculptures were completed as part of my Bachelor in Fine Arts Graduating exhibition at the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina, SK. The sculptures represent the three largest bottled water retailers in the world.
Commissioned by the Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina, SK) for the Sherwood Village Library branch. Since plastic is a subsidiary of petroleum, I made the sculpture's base seem like it was melting into a puddle of plastic and oil. The label references the increasing shortage of fossil fuels and our reliance on them, but also gives the viewer a renewed sense of where our everyday materials originate.
